King Magnus BarelegsMagnus King of Norway came to Ireland in 1101 along the waters of Strangford Lough and up the River Quoile. On landing, he formed an alliance with Muirchertach Ua Brianin, King of Connaught - Magnus betrothed his son to Ua Brianin’s daughter. Magnus agreed to supply manpower to Ua Brianin, this added strength would aid Ua on his quest of Irish dominance, and in his return was to be given cattle. Magnus and Ua Brianin were both highly ambitious, both had ambitions to become High King of Ireland. Ua Brianin was unaware of Magnus’ plans to overthrow him. Magnus decided that it was time to collect his cattle and return for Norway. He arranged to meet his men on St. Bartholomew’s day (23rd August 1103) at the Quoile River, in Downpatrick. Here he was ambushed and met his death. Magnus is buried in Downpatrick Marshes; in a mound distinguished by a small group of trees and now marked by a stone. His sword ‘legbiter’ was taken home to Norway. |
